A significant incident has occurred in the cryptocurrency realm involving MakerDAO, where a governance delegate fell victim to a phishing scam, resulting in the loss of $11 million in digital assets. The theft primarily affected Aave Ethereum (aEthMK) and Pendle USDe tokens. Scam Sniffer, an industry specialist, detected the event early on June 23rd, revealing that the user unwittingly signed deceptive transactions leading to the loss of their crypto holdings.

The transaction details indicate a swift transfer of funds from the sender's address to the recipient's address within just 11 seconds. The victim, a governance delegate crucial to MakerDAO, holds responsibilities such as voting on governance proposals and making critical decisions that shape the Maker protocol.

Maker (MKR) holders and delegates typically vote on proposals that progress through initial stages to final executive ratification. Approved proposals are implemented by the Maker protocol after a waiting period known as the Governance Security Module (GSM), which serves as a security measure against abrupt protocol changes.

The method used in this theft, phishing scams, is a prevalent cybercrime tactic that deceives victims into divulging sensitive information by posing as trustworthy entities. In this case, the scam utilized a tactic known as "approval phishing," where scammers masquerade as members of the Permit network to trick victims into signing transactions, granting the scammers access to drain their wallets.

While not a new tactic, phishing scams, particularly those involving approval phishing, have become more frequent. According to Scam Sniffer, these scams collectively extracted $300 million from 320,000 users in 2023 alone, with some individuals losing substantial amounts, such as $24.05 million, due to deceptive transactions falsely associated with networks like Permit and Approve.
