But let’s take a look at how it all started, from Web1 to Web3.

1. Evolution of the Internet from Web1 to Web3

Web1 is the first generation of the internet or means of consuming information. It’s also referred to as a Static Web, covering a period from 1990s to early 2000s.

Characteristics:

✔️Static Pages: Information is read-only.

✔️No Interaction: Users can only view and read content.

Examples: Early websites with text and images, like the first Yahoo or MSN pages.

During this era, people had little means to challenge the information presented, unlike today’s interactive web. For instance, if Mungo Park had written about discovering the bank of the River Niger on social media today, readers could have easily contested his claim. This period also saw many negative stories about Africans, which lacked counterarguments due to limited public interaction.

Web2 is the second generation of the internet - the Social Web ranging from Mid-2000s to the present.

Characteristics:

✔️Dynamic and Interactive: Users can interact with content and each other.

✔️User-Generated Content: Social media, blogs, and video platforms where users create and share content.

✔️Centralization: Platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter control user data.

Examples: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Wikipedia.

✔️Decentralization: No central authority; data is stored across a network of computers (blockchain).

✔️Ownership and Control: Users have control over their own data and assets.

Think of blockchain as a digital notebook that everyone can see but no one can change. It keeps track of all the important information safely and clearly. In this system, cryptocurrencies are used as the main type of money, and they aren't controlled by any single person or organization.

Historical Context: The 2008 Financial Crisis

The financial crisis of 2008, caused by banks and other factors, led to significant economic turmoil and a loss of trust in traditional financial systems. Many people lost their wealth overnight due to compromises by financial institutions.

In response, in 2008, an individual or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto began researching ways to keep money control out of financial institutions. This resulted in the Bitcoin whitepaper, introducing Bitcoin as a decentralized digital currency.

Bitcoin's Launch

Bitcoin was launched in 2009 as the first cryptocurrency, offering a decentralized alternative to traditional currencies. Features like borderless transactions, alternative payment options, and security attracted early users to Bitcoin and its blockchain.

However, Bitcoin's blockchain had some limitations in terms of scalability and functionality. To address these challenges, developers started building alternative blockchains. For example, Ethereum introduced smart contracts and its own currency (ETH), and Solana focused on higher transaction speeds with its token (SOL).
