In an exciting development for the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, the team at Aave Labs has put forth a proposal marking a significant milestone in the evolution of their lending protocol. This ambitious five-year plan aims to revamp and enhance the existing Aave protocol, setting the stage for the launch of a groundbreaking new version, V4.

On the 1st of May, Aave introduced a governance proposal that seeks feedback from the community regarding the planned upgrade to V4. The proposal not only outlines the core upgrades but also hints at a host of new features and improvements to the Aave Network. Among these enhancements are plans for a cross-chain liquidity layer, non-Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) layer-1 deployments, and a striking new visual identity.

Central to the V4 upgrade is a complete overhaul of the architecture, featuring a cutting-edge "Unified Liquidity Layer" designed to facilitate seamless integration of innovative functionalities like isolation pools, risk modules, and their proprietary stablecoin GHO. Additionally, the proposal includes novel mechanisms such as interest rates that can dynamically adjust based on real-time market conditions using Chainlink data oracles.

The team at Aave has also outlined plans for Liquidity Premiums, a pioneering concept that enables adaptive borrowing costs tied to collateral risk profiles. Furthermore, the proposal highlights the introduction of vaults and smart accounts, aimed at simplifying user management of positions within the protocol.

One of the key areas of focus within the proposal is the improvement and expansion of Aave's algorithmic stablecoin GHO. While GHO, launched in July 2023, has made strides in the industry, it still trails behind competitors like Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC) in terms of market capitalization. Proposed enhancements for GHO include refining the liquidation engine with variable liquidation bonuses and introducing "soft" liquidations, alongside enhancing opportunities for users to earn interest on their GHO holdings.

To address potential depegging scenarios, the team has put forward an emergency redemption mechanism tailored specifically for GHO. At present, the proposal is in the preliminary "temperature check" phase, gauging community sentiment before progressing to an official on-chain vote.

The roadmap for development spans from the research phase in Q2 of 2024 to the targeted full release of V4 by mid-2025, signifying a meticulous and thorough approach to implementation. Aave Labs has also submitted a grant proposal, seeking funding equivalent to 15 million GHO and 25,000 stkAAVE—valued at around $17 million—for the first year of the multi-year plan.

Aave currently stands as the third-largest DeFi protocol, boasting a total value locked of approximately $10 billion, as per DefiLlama data. Despite its prominence, the native AAVE token has seen fluctuations in value, with its trading price hovering at $82.35, reflecting a 9% decrease over the past week and a substantial 87.6% drop from its all-time high of $660 recorded three years ago.
