Bithumb, the prominent South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, has recently disclosed its financial performance for the fiscal year 2023, revealing significant challenges and notable developments. According to reports, Bithumb reported an operating loss of approximately 14.9 billion won (equivalent to $11 million USD) for the year, citing multiple factors contributing to this decline.

One of the primary reasons cited for the operating loss is a substantial drop in revenue, with Bithumb experiencing a staggering 58% decrease compared to the previous year. This decline in revenue is attributed to various factors, including the enduring effects of the crypto winter, which led to decreased trading volumes across the platform.

Furthermore, Bithumb implemented a fee-free policy during the fourth quarter of 2023 in an attempt to stimulate trading activity. Interestingly, Bithumb's decision to remove trading fees in the fourth quarter of 2023 resulted in a notable surge in market share. The exchange's market share increased from 12% in October 2023 to 40% by February of the following year, indicating the effectiveness of this strategic move in gaining a competitive edge over rivals, particularly Upbit.
