When we talk about decentralized social media platforms, we do not necessarily refer to Social media platforms built on the Blockchain, but one that features distributed control, meaning no single entity has total authority. It often emphasizes privacy, user autonomy, and transparency in data handling. Users have greater control over their data.

With greater user control comes the demand for content moderation/ scrutiny. The demand for decentralized social media arose from the fact that centralized social media platforms sell users' data, and moderate posts based on their rules. There was a lack of freedom of speech as some topics and words were censored.

Decentralized Social Media platforms solved the issue of censorship and single-entity control but created the risk of false or malicious content free flow, abuses shielded by anonymity. Above these challenges, we will discuss the impact of unmoderated decentralized social media platforms where misleading contents are easily spread with little or no consequences.

Two days ago, there was a Medium post on an airdrop giveaway of a token. The token in question belongs to a project I know and because such information is false and with malicious links, it was reported to Medium and the post was taken down. Imagine if such a post took place in a decentralized Social Media where posted content can only be managed by the user. Such malicious posts will live on the internet and lead many users to harm.

We may argue that moderation of content will make such a platform less of a decentralized Social platform, however, without content moderation, especially in this era where bad players are always busy looking for vulnerable users to hack, we may end up creating a haven for these bad players.

With Community content moderation whereby suspected malicious content is voted on to decide the legitimacy of the claim and the subsequent step ( deletion of content/ retaining of the content ), decentralization will be maintained, so as the integrity of the contents on the platform. Being transparent, community-driven content moderation can enhance user trust and accountability within the community.

However, it's essential to acknowledge the limitations of community-driven moderation and the need for intervention in cases of severe violations or emergent threats.

Bias and Subjectivity

Community-drivenmoderation may be influenced by the biases and subjective opinions of the users involved. Different individuals may have varying interpretations of what constitutes acceptable content, leading to inconsistencies in moderation decisions.

Manipulation and Gaming: Bad actors may attempt to manipulate the moderation systems by coordinating efforts to boost or suppress certain content. This can undermine the effectiveness and fairness of the moderation process.

Scale and Volume: As social media platforms grow in size and user activity increases, community-driven moderation may struggle to keep pace with the volume of content being shared. This can lead to delays in addressing moderation issues or oversights in content.

Legal and Cultural Challenges: Community-driven moderation may encounter legal and cultural challenges when content standards vary across different regions or countries. What is deemed acceptable in one culture may be considered offensive or harmful in another, leading to conflicts and controversies.

Decentralized Social Media Platforms must then establish clear guidelines for when and how centralized moderation actions may be taken to protect users' safety and maintain platform integrity. Relying solely on community content moderation may not provide the help needed during severe cases.
