A Binance executive was caught and then managed to escape while in Nigeria, setting off a series of investigations. The executive, in charge of Binance's operations in Africa, left Nigeria using a passport that was secretly given to him. This event unfolded after Nigerian authorities started looking into Binance for allegations related to money laundering.

Nadeem Anjarwalla, who oversees Binance in Africa, found a way out of Nigeria with a passport passed to him covertly, as stated by the office of Nigeria’s National Security Adviser. This incident has led to the detention of the personnel who were supposed to be watching over him, with a full investigation now in motion to understand how Anjarwalla managed to escape.

Nigeria, known for its large volume of crypto transactions, has many of its citizens turning to cryptocurrency amid rising inflation and the falling value of its currency. Anjarwalla was detained on February 26 alongside another colleague as part of a wider action against the cryptocurrency company. His colleague, Tigran Gambaryan, a citizen of the United States, is still being held.

This escape incident occurred shortly before the executives were scheduled to appear in court on April 4. Following the accusations from Nigerian authorities that Binance's operations could be facilitating money laundering and terrorism financing, the platform stopped its transactions using the Nigerian naira early in March. However, there has been no public disclosure of evidence supporting these claims.

Additionally, Nigeria’s tax authority has charged Binance with four counts of tax evasion, alleging the platform helps users avoid taxes.
