The surge in fees comes amid preparations for the launch of the Runes protocol, designed to address the scalability issues plaguing the Bitcoin network. Unlike traditional protocols like Ordinals, Runes operates autonomously, promising more streamlined and cost-effective transactions. Notably, several projects, including the NFT collection PUPS, have announced plans to adopt tokens based on the Runes standard, anticipating improved efficiency.

The rise in transaction fees is widely attributed to the impending release of the Runes protocol by Casey Rodarmor, who positioned it as a user-friendly alternative to existing solutions. Rodarmor emphasized that the congestion caused by BRC-20 tokens, such as PUPS, has been a significant factor driving up fees on the network.

PUPS, an experimental BRC-20 token on the BTC blockchain, has gained attention for its innovative approach. Following the scheduled halving event on April 20, developers intend to migrate the asset to the Runes protocol, seeking to capitalize on its promise of enhanced scalability and reduced fees. Notably, PUPS has seen a meteoric rise in value over the past week, positioning itself as the "first meme coin on the Bitcoin network" and experiencing a staggering price increase of over 1,200%.
