Unveiling the Scheme

The term "pig butchering" describes a method where scammers "fatten" their victims with promises of substantial returns on cryptocurrency investments, only to defraud them in the end. This method has seen victims across not just Brooklyn, but nationwide, suffering significant financial losses, with annual losses from similar scams reaching into the billions.

The DA's office was propelled into action following numerous reports of such fraudulent activities, including a distressing complaint from a 51-year-old woman who lost $22,680 to a similar scam in March 2023. She was drawn into making significant deposits into what were promised as lucrative crypto investments through chat groups, only to find herself unable to withdraw her funds.

Tackling the Fraud

The Virtual Currency Unit of the DA’s office spearheaded the investigation, unraveling the complexities of the scam. The probe revealed a network of over 80 domains, with coinformat.com identified as the core of the fraudulent operation. Investigators also discovered malicious mobile apps linked to the scam, designed to secretly extract sensitive information from users.
