Linea, an Ethereum layer-2 solution supported by Consensys, is urging Matter Labs to withdraw its trademark filing for "ZK," citing concerns that the move contradicts Ethereum's principles.

The controversy arose when Matter Labs, the developer behind zkSync, announced its intention to trademark "ZK" for its upcoming token. Linea, along with other prominent figures in the crypto community, has voiced opposition to this decision, emphasizing that attempting to claim ownership over a cryptographic term goes against the ethos of Ethereum.

In a recent X post, Linea called on Matter Labs to uphold the values of decentralization and collaboration by retracting its trademark application. The company stressed its support for StarkWare, another player in the zero-knowledge cryptography space, which has also urged Matter Labs to reconsider its trademark filing.

The dispute stems from concerns that Matter Labs' attempt to secure exclusive rights to "ZK" could hinder innovation and impede the development of open-source solutions in the field. Critics argue that such actions could discourage cooperation and restrict the free use of essential cryptographic terminology.

Polyhedra Network, which previously used "ZK" as its token ticker, has since changed it to "ZKJ," condemning Matter Labs' actions as obstructive to blockchain progress.
