This increase represents a 70.3% rise from the first quarter and a striking 112% increase year-over-year, highlighting a growing trend in the vulnerability of digital assets.

Analyzing Major Incidents and Security Failures

Data from Immunefi, a web3 bug bounty and security services platform, underscores the dire state of crypto security, emphasizing the urgent need for improved protective measures industry-wide.

Centralized finance (CeFi) platforms were the primary targets, accounting for 70% of the total losses. This shift indicates a troubling trend as attackers focus more on CeFi institutions than decentralized finance (DeFi) networks, which were previously more targeted.

Major incidents included a $305 million exploit of the Japanese trading platform DMM Bitcoin and a $55 million theft from the Turkish exchange BtcTurk.

Key Hacks in Q2

May was the most challenging month, with the highest losses at $358.5 million. Despite these significant financial damages, there were some minor recoveries, totaling $28.7 million, or 5% of the total stolen in Q2.

Recoveries occurred across four notable exploits: Bloom, ALEX Lab, Gala Games, and YOLO Games. Mitchell Amador, founder and CEO of Immunefi, highlighted the severe impact of infrastructure compromises, especially when involving CeFi platforms.

Hacks were the predominant loss mode, accounting for 98.5% of total financial damages across 53 incidents. In contrast, fraud, scams, and rug pulls made up just 1.5% of losses but occurred in 19 incidents. This disparity underscores the technical complexity and scale of hacks compared to traditional fraudulent activities in the crypto sector.

Targeted Networks and Emerging Threats

Ethereum and BNB Chain were the most targeted networks, continuing the trend from Q1. Ethereum faced the most attacks, with 34 incidents accounting for 46.6% of total chain losses, followed by BNB Chain with 18 incidents.

This targeted aggression towards major networks highlights the need for ongoing vigilance and improved security protocols within these ecosystems.

The rise of deep fake technology presents a new frontier in crypto-related scams. Bitget Research recently projected that losses due to deep fake scams could exceed $25 billion by 2024. These sophisticated schemes often involve fake projects, phishing attacks, and Ponzi schemes, exploiting deep fake technology to deceive and mislead investors.
