South Korea's crypto investors are facing a cunning new enemy: voice phishing scams that have evolved beyond simple phone calls. These elaborate schemes are designed to fleece victims of their hard-earned cash and cryptocurrency.

According to a recent Segye Ilbo report, attackers are crafting elaborate online worlds to trick their targets. One tactic involves luring unsuspecting individuals to fake crypto exchanges that appear legitimate. The report details the case of "A," who received a suspicious text message claiming a fraudulent credit card transaction. A concerned A called the provided number, only to be bounced between a phony customer service agent and a fake "FSS employee." These imposters convinced A to download a call-forwarding app, ultimately leading them to a scammer posing as a prosecutor. The "prosecutor" then instructed A to buy cryptocurrency as "proof" of their scam victim status, ultimately draining over $41,000.

Crypto scam victims are also being targeted. The report describes the case of "C," who was contacted by a company claiming to help those scammed by a bogus crypto trading "reading room." C was then directed to a new chat room promoting a fake exchange called Ebit. C, convinced by enthusiastic members, invested over $83,000 in crypto futures, only to discover Ebit was a sham and his money was gone.

These are just a few examples of the evolving tactics employed by South Korean crypto scammers. Police have confirmed a significant rise in voice phishing incidents, and a recent arrest of a civil servant highlights the potential for insider information to fuel these schemes. Investors in South Korea's crypto market need to be extra vigilant and avoid falling prey to these deceptive attacks.
