The second surge happened around 11 a.m. ET when Elon Musk, a prominent advocate of the memecoin, tweeted about the dog's passing along with a Shiba meme and a gorilla reference. This tweet evoked another layer of internet history related to Harambe, a gorilla that became an internet sensation after a tragic incident at the Cincinnati Zoo in 2016.

Elon Musk's involvement and endorsements have played a significant role in Dogecoin's previous surges, although he mentioned in December 2023 that he doesn't focus much on cryptocurrencies anymore.
