The SIM-swap attack compromised the users' accounts by gaining unauthorized access through hijacked SMS and email credentials. The hackers cleverly concealed their actions by sending a risk notification SMS, making it appear as a legitimate security alert. They then created a new API key, granting them seamless access to the accounts. OKX promptly investigated the incident, involving law enforcement to track down the perpetrators. Although the investigation is ongoing, OKX discreetly refunded the victims without publicly disclosing the details.

In response to the security breach, OKX introduced an additional layer of protection by making Google Authenticator mandatory for all accounts. This enhancement requires users to input a six-digit code from their authenticator app, significantly reducing the risk of unauthorized access. The security vulnerability was identified by blockchain security group Dilation Effect (DE), which revealed that OKX's system allowed users to switch from two-factor authentication (2FA) to less secure verification methods during sensitive operations. OKX is not the first exchange to experience a SIM-swap attack. In 2022, FTX, a bankrupt crypto exchange, suffered a similar attack, resulting in the theft of approximately $400 million. The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) also fell victim to a SIM-swap attack in January, where hackers gained control of their account and made a false announcement about approving Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Influential figures like Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-founder, have also been targeted by SIM-swap attacks.
