According to a recent story by CoinDesk, unidentified state officials are looking into the Ethereum Foundation, a Swiss non-profit organization. The inquiry was purportedly discovered by the group in a GitHub contribution on February 26, 2024. They haven't, however, issued a comment in response to the ongoing claims.

The organization declared that they had been notified of a state authority's probe, which includes a necessity for confidentiality. As of right now, there is little information available about the investigation's goal or scope in general.

The announcement comes at a crucial juncture for the Ethereum ecosystem at large. In particular, the chain launched the eagerly awaited Dencun update just last week. The goal of integrating the technical advancements was to reduce transaction costs for the users of Ethereum Layer-2 networks.

The “confidential” investigation, if true, also comes at a pivotal moment for Ethereum's native coin, ETH, which several American financial firms are attempting to provide as an exchange-traded fund. The SEC wishes to classify ETH as a security, Fortune reported. ETH being regarded as a security will have negative implications for ETH if it is to be approved as an ETF, following BTC ETF approval earlier this year. For ETH, a comparable event would have a significant impact on both the market and its value.

Other unconfirmed sources claim that the investigation started back in 2022 when Ethereum shifted from the Proof of Work consensus mechanism to Proof of Stake.
