Lilian Nurieva, who previously held the position of Head of Networks at a Russian cryptocurrency investment fund called Finiko, has been handed a three-year prison term for deceiving private investors and being involved in a structured criminal organization.

The fraudulent scheme amounting to $55 million orchestrated by Finiko is recognized as the second-largest financial fraud in Russia's history post the Soviet era, as reported by the Federal Foundation for the Protection of Investors and Shareholders Rights.

Crypto Fund Unveiled as Ponzi Scheme

In 2021, authorities in Russia initiated an investigation into Finiko, a purported 'crypto investment fund,' for fraudulent activities and organized crime. The probe revealed that the fund operated as a Ponzi scheme, siphoning off millions from unsuspecting investors.

Between 2018 and 2021, Finiko masqueraded as a cryptocurrency fund but functioned as a pyramid scheme, attracting investors under false pretenses. The mastermind behind the scam, Kirill Doronin, conducted seminars across the country, luring in a substantial clientele.

Doronin, in collaboration with his partners, established a criminal network to systematically misappropriate funds from the public. Prospective investors were enticed with promises of extraordinary profits through a purportedly 'unique automatic profit generation system' that guaranteed substantial returns in cryptocurrencies, notably Bitcoin.

Initially, investors received dividends and could withdraw their earnings in Bitcoin. However, the situation took a drastic turn when Finiko's cryptocurrency token plummeted in value in 2021. Within a month, the company's offices were abruptly shuttered, and its online presence vanished, leaving investors at a loss.

Doronin attempted to placate investors by attributing the fund's troubles to technical glitches. Subsequently, it was revealed that his associates had absconded with investors' funds, leaving many in dire financial straits.

Legal Ramifications and Sentencing

Lilia Nurieva, a key figure within Finiko, was convicted of defrauding investors by the Vakhitovsky District Court of Kazan. Despite initially facing a four-and-a-half-year sentence for fraud and involvement in a criminal syndicate, Nurieva's cooperation with authorities led to a reduced three-year prison term, factoring in her pre-trial detention period.

Prosecutors had sought a six-and-a-half-year sentence for the Russian executive, but a pre-trial agreement enabled Nurieva to mitigate her punishment. She admitted to the charges and assisted in the investigation, resulting in a separate trial from the other defendants.

Nurieva's defense attorney, Maria Belousova, acknowledged the fairness of the accusations against her client. Belousova highlighted that Nurieva was the sole defendant who had invested her own funds in the scheme, having contributed 40 million rubles before her involvement in the criminal enterprise.

While Nurieva has been sentenced, the remaining ten defendants, including Doronin, are awaiting trial. The Prosecutor General's office has endorsed their indictment for organizing a criminal group and perpetrating large-scale fraud, signaling further legal proceedings in the case.
