Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of FTX, is being moved to a new prison facility, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. The transfer was initiated by federal officials early in the morning, though the exact destination remains undisclosed.

A representative for Bankman-Fried informed the WSJ that they "couldn't confirm" his new location. However, sources familiar with the situation suggest that he is likely being relocated to a prison in Mendota, California. This move follows federal prosecutors' recent recommendation that Bankman-Fried be transferred to a low-security facility in California, which would be closer to his parents' residence in Palo Alto.

Bankman-Fried had previously expressed a preference to remain at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), a mixed-security facility in New York, to stay near his legal team working on his appeal. Despite his wishes, the decision to move him seems to align with the prosecutors' recommendation for a low-security facility.

As of now, it remains uncertain whether Bankman-Fried has already departed from MDC Brooklyn or has arrived at his new facility in California. Representatives for Bankman-Fried did not immediately respond to The Block's request for comments on the matter.

Bankman-Fried's incarceration began early last year after Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of the Southern District of New York revoked his bail on charges of witness tampering. He is currently serving a 25-year sentence, which was handed down by Judge Kaplan on March 28. The transfer to a new facility marks another chapter in the ongoing legal saga of the former crypto executive.
