Ether restaking is hailed as a robust financial tool offering double-digit passive returns, but its complexity and associated risks require careful investor understanding, according to Jeff Owens, co-founder and CEO of Haven1.

In a discussion with Cointelegraph, Owens emphasized that while Ether restaking protocols promise attractive returns, the primary risk stems from investor unfamiliarity with asset looping. Asset looping involves reinvesting the same capital across multiple protocols, leveraging liquid staking to generate additional yield through decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms.

Haven1, an Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible layer-1 blockchain, recently launched its liquid staking token, hsETH, aimed at optimizing capital efficiency for investors.

Liquid staking differs from traditional staking by allowing staked assets to be redeployed in various DeFi protocols, significantly enhancing capital utilization. Currently, the total value locked (TVL) in liquid staking protocols exceeds $51.1 billion, surpassing the TVL of the lending market, which stands at $32 billion, as reported by DefiLlama.

Despite its financial benefits, Owens cautioned that investors must grasp the implications of asset looping. He stressed, "The more you loop your assets, the more risk you're exposed to. If one layer fails to deliver rewards or withdraws, it can trigger a cascading effect of losses."

Regarding Haven1’s restaking portal, which offers an annual percentage rate (APR) of up to 25.24%, Owens clarified that this rate is an initial incentive mechanism for early adopters during the testnet phase. He reassured potential concerns by differentiating it from unsustainable models like Terra's Anchor Protocol, which faced issues in 2022. Owens underscored that Haven1’s APR will adjust based on market dynamics, ensuring sustainability and avoiding speculative risks.

To enhance security within its ecosystem, Haven1 has implemented a reserve fund funded by 10% of all application fees. This fund serves as a precautionary measure to mitigate potential risks associated with the emergent restaking protocols.
