In a bid to catalyze global economic liberation and foster the use of Bitcoin for advancing human rights, the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) has launched an innovative prize initiative. Speaking to Bitcoin Magazine, Alex Gladstein, Chief Strategy Officer of the HRF, emphasized the organization's mission to inspire individuals worldwide to leverage Bitcoin's potential for enhancing human rights.

Gladstein explained that the genesis of the initiative stemmed from a desire to empower people across diverse backgrounds to utilize Bitcoin as a tool for economic freedom. By creating a persistent prize structure spanning the early lifecycle of Bitcoin, the HRF aims to galvanize action and innovation in the realm of human rights advocacy.

Highlighting the significance of the Bitcoin halving event, Gladstein underscored its universal appeal as a moment for celebration and reflection. It is against this backdrop that the HRF chose to announce the Bitcoin-related prize, symbolizing a commitment to promoting positive change through the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

The inaugural laureate for the period spanning 2009-2012 is none other than Hal Finney, whose contributions to the Bitcoin ecosystem remain unparalleled. His 1 BTC prize will be directed towards causes aligned with the values and aspirations of his family, reflecting a legacy of altruism and dedication to making a difference.

Looking ahead, the HRF will collaborate with the Finney family to establish a seven-person "Genesis Committee." Tasked with selecting laureates for subsequent eras (2012-2016, 2016-2020, and 2020-2024), this committee will play a pivotal role in identifying individuals or organizations at the forefront of utilizing Bitcoin for humanitarian purposes.

Starting from the 2024-2028 era, a new committee will be formed to continue the tradition of honoring individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to advancing human rights through Bitcoin. Each era will accommodate a maximum of two laureates, with recipients receiving 50 million satoshis (half of a bitcoin) each in the event of dual selection.

Through this visionary initiative, the Human Rights Foundation aims to empower changemakers and amplify the impact of Bitcoin in fostering a more equitable and just world for all.
