A cautionary tale has emerged from Washington State, where an investor recently fell victim to a sophisticated cryptocurrency scam, losing a staggering $310,000. The scheme unfolded after the investor received an unsolicited LinkedIn connection request, leading them to engage with a dubious cryptocurrency trading platform known as Ethfinance.

The investor, enticed by promises of substantial returns, deposited funds totaling $310,000 from their decentralized finance (DeFi) wallet into Ethfinance. Expectations of profitable crypto trades quickly soured when attempts to withdraw both the initial investment and purported profits were met with demands for additional funds. Allegedly, these funds were required to fulfill a "smart contract" stipulation necessary for the withdrawal process.

Refusal to comply with these demands resulted in the investor's account being arbitrarily locked, effectively freezing all access to deposited funds. Despite efforts to reclaim their investment, the investor found themselves unable to withdraw any funds from Ethfinance.

EthFinance, the platform at the center of the controversy, continues to operate online, raising concerns among regulatory bodies like the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) Securities Division. Officials suspect this incident could fall under the category of "Advance Fee Fraud," a deceptive tactic where fraudsters promise high returns or services in exchange for upfront payments, only to abscond once payments are made.

This case echoes a similar report from California, where another individual lost over $165,000 in a separate scam involving EthFinance. In this instance, the victim was lured into cryptocurrency options trading lessons online, only to be deceived into paying supposed "taxes" amounting to 25% of their profits to a fraudulent entity posing as the "CEO of Crypto Customer Service" on Telegram. The promise of lucrative returns quickly evaporated, leaving the victim in financial distress.

In response to these alarming incidents, the Washington DFI has issued alerts warning the public about fictitious crypto exchanges and fraudulent investment management platforms. These alerts underscore the importance of exercising caution and conducting thorough due diligence when engaging in cryptocurrency investments, particularly in response to unsolicited offers or requests from unknown entities online.
