Kraken, a prominent global cryptocurrency trading platform, has uncovered a critical bug that effectively allowed users to generate free funds on the exchange. Despite the severity of the issue, the exchange assures that no client assets were actually at risk.

The vulnerability was brought to Kraken's attention by a security researcher who contacted the exchange via email. Although the team often deals with fake bug bounty reports, they took this particular alert seriously and promptly investigated the matter.

The exchange's investigation revealed a bug that enabled bad actors to initiate a deposit on Kraken and receive funds in their account without completing the actual deposit. This effectively allowed them to "print" assets out of thin air, according to Nick Percoco, Kraken's chief security officer. The issue arose due to a recent user experience (UX) change that would credit accounts before the associated assets had cleared.

Accounts Exploited the Bug to Generate Millions

Kraken's team discovered that three accounts had managed to take advantage of the bug. Notably, one of the accounts belonged to the security researcher who had initially reported the vulnerability. This individual generated a small amount of $4 in crypto and later disclosed the bug to two other individuals, who then proceeded to print millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency.

"After patching the risk, we thoroughly investigated the situation and quickly discovered that 3 accounts had leveraged this flaw within a few days of each other. As we dug deeper, we noticed that one account was KYC'd to an individual who claimed to be a security researcher," Percoco explained.

The discovery of this critical bug highlights the importance of robust security measures and vigilance in the cryptocurrency industry. Kraken's prompt response and investigation into the matter demonstrate their commitment to maintaining the integrity of their platform and protecting their clients' assets.
