Bitcoin's mining difficulty achieved a new peak level during the latest adjustment on April 24, showing a 2% increase. This milestone came after the fourth block reward halving.

According to Bitbo data, the recent adjustment at block height 840,672 set a record difficulty level of 88.1 trillion. This stands out from previous patterns following block reward halvings, as the difficulty data showed reductions like -2%, 0%, and -6% after the November 2020, July 2016, and May 2020 halvings respectively.

The elevation in mining difficulty ties back to the decrease in block rewards from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC post the halving event.

Rise in Transaction Fee Transactions

Miners are experiencing significant gains from transaction fees, with recent trends demonstrating a surge in transaction fee engagements after the halving. Unlike past instances where fee hikes didn't match hashrate decreases post-halving, the current scene reflects a rise in hashrate fueled by intensified transaction fee rewards.

Since the block reward halving at 840,000, transaction fees have risen notably, at times exceeding block rewards. This signifies the increasing importance of transaction fees as a core revenue source for miners, forming a large slice of the overall rewards. Notably, the transaction fee surge is partly linked to excitement around the new Bitcoin fungible token standard introduced during the halving, known as the Runes protocol.

Although the initial spike in transaction fees has settled to some extent, fees remain elevated compared to pre-halving levels. Despite this correction, transactions tied to the Runes protocol are still a prominent segment of Bitcoin transactions, showing enduring interest and engagement.
