Detained Nigerian Binance Executive breaks out from house detention and leaves the nation. Africa's biggest Bitcoin hotspot is rife with rumours of a crackdown.

A dispute between the government and Binance has been brewing in Nigeria, the country with the largest digital asset market in Africa. As a result, one of the company's leaders managed to get out of house arrest and leave the nation.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria, with the sixth-largest population on Earth, is a significant economic force in Africa and a respectable player in the global economy. Global financial institutions have been very interested in Nigeria's potential economic development, but of particular interest is the country's apparent affinity for Bitcoin; for instance, Nigeria ranks highly when relevant Google searches are made for terms like "invest in crypto," etc. Furthermore, Nigeria has the highest trading volumes in all of Africa for some classic reasons including high inflation and depreciating local currency. These factors make the potential bitcoinization of Nigeria a huge benefit for bitcoin users everywhere, and the country may one day be a real hub for the industry.

The growing conflict between Binance and the Nigerian government should therefore be of interest to Bitcoin enthusiasts today, especially in light of the potential for a wider crackdown on the sector. When a purported "glitch" in Binance's peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction platform caused user prices to drop in February 2024, the dispute really got started. At that time, government representatives accused the company of "blatantly setting a special exchange rate for Nigeria" and "trying to manipulate our currency to Ground Zero." The Central Bank (CBN) attempted to take action against Binance after realising that the naira's declining performance might have been caused by the extensive use of P2P Bitcoin transactions. Given that Nigerian inflation is increasing at its quickest rate in decades, this issue seemed particularly challenging to authorities

In order to achieve this, a rather perplexing sequence of events transpired: in February, rumours went around that the government was obstructing services from significant exchanges including as Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken. For their side, Coinbase asserted that at the time, they had not encountered any issues of this nature with the Nigerian authorities. Following the CBN's announcement that $26 billion in "untraceable" cash had reportedly gone via Binance's activities in Nigeria, the government went on to explain its stance.

This quantity of cash would represent a significant capital outflow for the entire economy. Additionally, of course, such a large figure certainly reflects a relatively high level of interest and adoption in the broader population. After Binance refused to cooperate with allegations that it had enabled various financial crimes on its platform, the government took the aggressive step of detaining two executives—a British and an American citizen.

As things got more complicated between Nigeria and the cryptocurrency economy as a result of this action, a flurry of activity followed. Was Binance singled out by the government for its uncooperative behaviour, or was this just the start of a larger campaign of repression against the Bitcoin community? The nation's biggest peer-to-peer exchange was shut down by the government, but will peer-to-peer Bitcoin trading be the next to go? Nigerian authorities released a revised set of rules that foreign exchanges must abide by, and the government also formed a new alliance to test the viability of introducing a CBDC, the eNaira. When Nadeem Anjarwalla—a dual British-Kenyan national and detained Binance executive—escaped Nigerian detention on March 25th using a "smuggled passport," the tense and unclear situation reached a highly unexpected head. Nigeria has requested that INTERPOL issue an international arrest order for Anjarwalla, despite his family's insistence that his departure from the nation was totally lawful. Anjarwalla vanished after it appears that his guards permitted him to leave house detention so he could go to a neighbouring mosque and participate in prayers. In addition to the guards being detained while an inquiry is conducted, Binance has been officially accused of tax evasion by the government. Tigran Gambaryan, Anjarwalla's American coworker, has been listed as a defendant in the charges and is still being held in federal detention.

To be honest, these appear like ominous signs for the Bitcoin market in Nigeria. Though the company is already beset with legal issues, it is still possible that the government is just trying to bully Binance in particular. Apart from its difficulties in Africa, the company has had significant setbacks on three other continents. The most well-known of these is the $4.3 billion fine imposed by the US Department of Justice on the corporation, which also caused CEO Chengpeng Zhao to retire and perhaps face jail time. Although Binance.US was split off to better comply with US legal standards, it is likely doomed to fail because to several class-action lawsuits and SEC disputes. It wouldn't be the first instance, as CommEX, Binance’s successor in Russia after a similar exodus, just closed its doors on March 25th. The company was also blocked in the Philippines the same day, after the government accused Binance of operating without a license.

Put another way, the Nigerian government might have just decided that this was the right moment to take aim at a troubled rival that the nation's securities watchdogs had long been following. To be sure, there are a number of concerning indications that there may be a crackdown on Bitcoin. For example, a Nigerian court ordered Binance to provide information on its biggest traders, and there have also been reports that police are allegedly pursuing street cryptocurrency dealers. Not helping matters was the inquiry into the eNaira, a potential CBDC to replace the demand for Bitcoin and other digital assets. There are, however, still many grounds for optimism about the future.

For starters, Ray Youssef, the CEO of NoOnes and the previous CEO of Paxful, expressed his company's optimism about its prospects in Nigeria in public. Youssef called the move an invitation to the "big boys" like Coinbase or his own company functioning in the Nigerian market. He proposed that Nigeria actually raise the registration fees for exchanges to operate in the nation. Youssef continued by saying that exchanges with little to no P2P capabilities should be allowed to continue operating normally, and that the government has an interest in preventing large multinational corporations from serving as the primary location for P2P sales out of concern for capital flight.

Nigerian consumers have a high preference for P2P as the ideal method for buying and selling Bitcoin, and the possibility that $26 billion can flow from Binance’s P2P market to uncertain locations has shaken the government deeply. Nevertheless, the actual practice of P2P Bitcoin sales is alive and well in the Nigerian market without Binance as an intermediary; for example, International Women’s Day 2024 in Nigeria was marked by large and well-attended seminars focused on educating women from all walks of life on Bitcoin. Focused on demystifying the world of decentralized finance and empowering women, these seminars were sponsored by a wide variety of P2P channels, enthusiasts, and businesses in the Nigerian crypto scene.

It appears that the reports of a more widespread crackdown on Bitcoin in Nigeria have been substantially overblown from where we are standing. It's easy to think that, if the government had any great interest in doing so, it would be launching similar attacks on other exchanges like Coinbase or perhaps the Bitcoin community as a whole, given how quickly the government's dispute with Binance is turning into an international search. For a while now, Binance has been seen as a disregarder of Nigerian laws, and it appears that Nigeria has now had the chance to join in on the heels of their concurrent legal actions in other locations. But the spirit of Bitcoin is still strong, and rivals of Binance are more than happy to take up their share of the market.
