We’ve seen the evolution of work from the traditional 9-5 to a more relaxed work environment with the Remote work style and Freelancing…

We can agree that at the time of the traditional workstyle, we had workers only having one source of income being their 9-5 due to the engaging timeframe but this wasn’t really reliable as the pay might not suffice. But now with the Remote workstyle, we can be able to work for anyone from anywhere at any time and this is with the given task driven work evaluation.

This means that all your employer cares about is if you were able to do your task as at the time frame given, and doesn't care how or when you got it done.

In the Blockchain space, this has been a revolutionary way of working with the decentralised system of operations as without this remote workstyle, the idea of decentralisation might not hold. This is how we can have transaction validators and multiple users in the blockchain space accept and complete their assigned duties without having to gather in a specific location..

But there's a threat to this remote work style and it's what we call “DOUBLE DIPPING”

Double Dipping | Worker or Employer Effect

Double dipping practically means taking up more than one full time remote role at the same time. Could be in different industries or could be in the same industry between competitors and according to the Financial Times, this is a major concern of chief HR Managers.

A recent survey by Gallup shows that about 16% of Hr managers say their company executives believe their workers are double dippers…… Mckinsey estimates that about 5% of the total remote workforce are involved in double dipping.

From an Executive’s Standpoint, why should this be punished….??

Most of the executives according to a recent survey by Gallup states that double dipping could affect employees' commitment to the employer and their work dedication thereby reducing their efficiency and in turn cutting down the company revenue….. Evidently there have been cases where these double dippers work for the competition and could be the ones who leak the company secrets to the competition. With the exposure of these incidents, severe actions have been taken with these workers being laid off and possibly arrested for leaking company secrets and this has in turn fed the fears of company executives…

Let me tell you a really funny true story..

An employee walks into his office with two laptops and inattentively opens them up. His colleagues discover the Logo of the competition emblazoned on the screen of one of those laptops and he was consequently laid off…..

This goes to show that these fears are not unfounded but factual in all sense, but then from an employee’s view, what could make one consider Double dipping…???

Employees Double Dipping, why??

Given the fact that many remote roles do not have a very attractive pay, workers would actually consider offering their services to another company to make ends meet… Given that we are limited to about three professional interests with at most a side skill with our main skill, it makes more sense why they would offer their service to a competitor as that is the field they are knowledgeable about. (Giving that every one in an industry is a competitor).

Possible Adjustments???

Given that the driving factor is mostly always the pay, company executives could consider improving the pay rate for remote roles to avoid these situations while offering enough benefits to ensure worker loyalty. This goes a long way to ensure that their talents are appreciated and they are satisfied with where they are…….
