Ripple, the blockchain network associated with the XRP cryptocurrency, has unveiled plans to utilize Axelar as the exclusive bridge protocol for its upcoming XRPL EVM sidechain. This move marks a strategic shift away from Ripple's previous XLS-38 cross-chain bridge proposal, aimed at simplifying the user experience and enhancing operational efficiency.

The XRPL EVM sidechain, developed in collaboration with Peersyst, will leverage evmOS—a modular and customizable technology stack—to facilitate seamless interoperability with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible applications. Axelar's role will be pivotal, enabling users to convert XRP into wrapped XRP (eXRP) and utilizing eXRP as the native token for gas fees on the sidechain.

Ripple emphasized Axelar's proven track record and extensive integrations with prominent projects such as Uniswap and Microsoft, underscoring Axelar's capability to streamline operations and bolster security within the XRPL ecosystem.

Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of Ripple, highlighted the rationale behind consolidating on Axelar, citing complexities associated with using multiple bridge protocols. By opting for Axelar as the sole bridge protocol for executing cross-chain smart contracts and handling various tokens, Ripple aims to enhance user-friendliness and operational coherence.

The announcement coincides with Ripple's broader initiatives to expand its blockchain ecosystem. Recently, Ripple launched a new fund aimed at nurturing blockchain development in Japan and Korea, part of its commitment to allocate 1 billion XRP to support developers building on XRPL. Additionally, Ripple unveiled plans for RLUSD (Real USD), its upcoming dollar-pegged stablecoin set to launch on both the XRP Ledger and Ethereum later this year.

These developments were disclosed at the ongoing XRP Ledger Apex event in Amsterdam, highlighting Ripple's proactive stance in advancing its blockchain infrastructure and fostering innovation within the digital asset space.
