A robot had gone rogue during a Moscow chess tournament and had broken a kid’s finger after he had made a move prematurely. The robot, which used AI to play three chess games at once, had grabbed and pinched the child’s finger. Despite several people rushing to help, the robot had broken the kid’s finger.

According to Moscow Chess Federation VP Sergey Smagin, the robot had been used for 15 years, and this was the first time such an incident had occurred.

Reports had suggested that the robot had expected its human rival to leave a set amount of time after it had made its play. The child had played too quickly, and the robot hadn’t known how to handle the situation.

“There were certain safety rules, and the child, apparently, had violated them. When he had made his move, he hadn’t realized he first had to wait,” Smagin had said. “This was an extremely rare case, the first I can recall.”

It hadn’t painted Russia’s robotics scene in the best light, and it had been quite surprising that the story had even made it out of the country’s notorious censorship.

Fortunately, the child’s finger had been put in a cast, and he had been expected to make a quick and complete recovery. There hadn’t appeared to be any lasting mental trauma either, as he had played again the next day.

A study in 2015 had found that one person was killed each year by an industrial robot in the US alone. As robots had become ever more prevalent in our work and personal lives, that number had likely increased.

Most injuries and fatalities with robots had been from human error, so it had always been worth being cautious.
