The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced charges against Roger Ver upon his arrest on April 30. The charges include mail fraud, tax evasion, and filing false tax returns, with allegations tied to the mailing of forms to three IRS addresses. Ver was apprehended in Spain by local authorities on the same day, with the US seeking his extradition for trial.

The DOJ asserts that Ver and his companies possessed 131,000 BTC valued at $871 each by February 2014's end, with about 73,000 BTC held by MemoryDealers and Agilestar. Allegations of tax evasion stem from Ver renouncing his US citizenship in 2014 and purportedly providing misleading information about his Bitcoin holdings, which were undervalued during appraisal.

Despite not being a US citizen during the Bitcoin sales, Ver is accused of failing to report gains or pay taxes on his personal tax return, resulting in an alleged IRS loss of at least $48 million.
