Following a sentencing hearing in federal court, former FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Judge Lewis Kaplan of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York handed down a total of 25 years, comprising 240 months and 60 months, for his conviction on seven felony charges.

Bankman-Fried, the first person linked to FTX and Alameda Research to receive prison time after the exchange's collapse in November 2022, was found guilty of witness tampering and perjury. Judge Kaplan emphasized the gravity of the crimes and suggested an $11-billion judgment in addition to the prison sentence.

Despite Bankman-Fried expressing remorse and his defense portraying him as a misunderstood genius, Judge Kaplan's sentence fell between recommendations from both defense attorneys and prosecutors.

Other individuals associated with FTX and Alameda, including Gary Wang, Caroline Ellison, Nishad Singh, and Ryan Salame, have pleaded guilty in the same case, with Salame expected to face sentencing on May 1.
