During the Consensus conference, Solana co-founder Raj Gokal emphasized the role of memecoins in intuitively onboarding users, attributing their popularity to user demand and their fun appeal as a means to attract new participants.

Solana (SOL) has emerged as the preferred blockchain for memecoin speculation, benefitting from increased on-chain activity, which has positively impacted SOL prices. However, this surge has also sparked discussions about Solana's position within the blockchain ecosystem.

According to CoinGecko, Solana stands out as the fastest-chain, processing thousands to millions of memecoin transactions. Despite concerns about rug pulls and scams associated with SOL memecoins, the involvement of celebrities in memetic projects has further fueled the craze.

Gokal emphasized that Solana did not actively promote the rise of memecoins but acknowledged their inherent appeal as a trend. He highlighted the significance of mobile crypto apps like StepN in 2021/2021 as precursors to the Saga Mobile device, which put blockchain operability and crypto utility directly into users' hands, facilitating mass adoption.

While the initial launch of Saga Mobile experienced lukewarm sales, the resurgence of crypto and the memecoin frenzy led to sales surpassing 150,000 units. Gokal revealed plans for the development of the next device, slated for launch next year.

Additionally, Gokal confirmed ongoing work on a second validator client set named Fire Dancer, aimed at significantly increasing Solana's transaction throughput. This initiative is expected to boost transaction speeds to 5,000 – 10,000 transactions per second (TPS), a substantial increase from Solana's current TPS of up to 1,053.

Furthermore, Solana's team is collaborating with the developers behind the staking protocol Jito to develop a third validator set focused on maximizing Extractable Value (MEV), aiming to enhance the efficiency and scalability of the Solana network.
