In a landmark case, a South Korean court has sentenced two individuals to eight months in jail and two years of probation for using cryptocurrency to facilitate drug trafficking. The Namyangju Criminal Division of the Uijeongbu District Court found the duo guilty of violating the Narcotics Control Act, marking a significant milestone in the nation's efforts to combat crypto-powered crime.

The case involved a 31-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman who used an unnamed cryptocurrency to purchase synthetic marijuana from a drug dealer via Telegram. The dealer had hidden the drugs in a public building in Seoul, and the pair were caught after attempting to retrieve them.

Presiding Judge Ahn Bok-yeol noted that drug crimes are often difficult to detect and have a significant negative impact on society. However, he took into account the defendants' remorse and lack of prior offenses, handing down a relatively lenient sentence.
