Institutional investors are leveraging spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) alongside the CME bitcoin futures market to execute basis trades, leading to a substantial rise in open interest.

According to Gabriel Selby, lead research analyst at CF Benchmarks, spot bitcoin ETFs have contributed to an impressive 80% surge in open interest on the CME bitcoin futures market year-to-date. This heightened institutional activity is expected to enhance bitcoin liquidity and foster a more interconnected market ecosystem.

Since the approval of spot bitcoin ETFs in October 2021, CF Benchmarks data reveal a notable increase in bitcoin short contracts on the CME, currently totaling nearly 18,000 contracts with a notional value around $6.3 billion. Selby highlighted that this figure significantly surpasses previous records, underscoring the impact of spot ETFs on market dynamics.

The surge in open interest is primarily attributed to basis trading strategies, which capitalize on price discrepancies between spot bitcoin ETFs and CME futures contracts to exploit arbitrage opportunities. When futures prices exceed spot prices, investors buy in the spot market to elevate spot prices, while simultaneously selling in the futures market to mitigate futures prices. Conversely, when futures prices fall below spot prices, selling in the spot market depresses spot prices, while purchasing in the futures market boosts futures prices.

Selby emphasized that while basis trading can influence spot prices in the short term, convergence between spot and futures prices is typically observed over time. Estimating the aggregate use of spot bitcoin ETFs for basis trades, Selby suggested it aligns closely with the $6 billion notional value on the CME.
