In the Ace Exchange fraud and money laundering case, prosecutors in Taiwan are recommending 20-year prison sentences for the four main suspects involved. The Taipei District Prosecutors' Office has indicted a total of 32 people, including Ace Exchange founder David Pan, his business partner Lin Keng-hong, and prominent attorney Wang Chen-huan, who served as the exchange's chairman.

The case revolves around the alleged scamming of over 1,200 individuals, resulting in estimated total losses of 800 million New Taiwan dollars ($24.56 million). This figure is a substantial increase from the previously estimated losses of 340 million NT$ ($10.6 million). Prosecutors believe that the scale of the losses justifies the recommended 20-year sentences for the main suspects.

The indictment also seeks at least 12 years in prison for Wang Chen-huan, taking into account his status as a director of a well-known law firm and his alleged role in assisting the fraudulent scheme.

The case unfolded in January 2024, when Taipei City Police arrested Pan and 14 others linked to the investigation, conducting raids at various locations, including Ace Exchange's headquarters. Investigations revealed Pan's association with a fraudulent crypto wallet service known as "Alfred" or "Afu wallet," along with a related crypto card.

According to prosecutors, the suspects promoted investments in various tokens, including NFTC tokens, bitnature coins, and mochange (an Ace Exchange token), in 2019. They used white papers and promotional materials to enhance the credibility of these investments. Pan and Lin's goal was to develop Ace Exchange into Asia's most comprehensive blockchain ecosystem for crypto trading.

However, many investors experienced a sharp decline in token values and were unable to convert them back to New Taiwan dollars as promised, leading them to file complaints and initiate a legal investigation.

A Taiwanese court has reportedly ruled that the defendants' property should be seized, with some confiscated assets amounting to at least 3.5 million NT$ or $110,000.

In response to the indictment, Ace Exchange issued a statement on April 8, emphasizing that Pan and his fraudulent activities were not connected to the platform, as he reportedly ceased involvement in day-to-day operations in 2022.

Ace Exchange, a lesser-known centralized crypto exchange based in Taiwan, was launched in late 2018 and trades around $14 million per day, according to data from CoinMarketCap. However, Traders Union data suggests that Ace Exchange should be considered a "high-risk cryptocurrency exchange" with a trust score of 2.78 out of 10.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the cryptocurrency industry in combating fraud and money laundering. As the sector continues to grow and attract more investors, it is crucial for authorities to remain vigilant and take action against bad actors who seek to exploit the industry for personal gain.
