Telegram, a messaging platform known for its support of cryptocurrency, has refuted allegations that a weakness in its system left users vulnerable to cyber attacks.

The claimed vulnerability, identified by blockchain security company CertiK on April 9, suggested that Telegram's desktop app could be susceptible to Remote Code Execution (RCE) attacks. This would allow malicious hackers to send harmful code through manipulated media files like images or videos, potentially putting users at risk.

CertiK clarified that this vulnerability is specific to desktop applications and does not affect mobile apps, which do not execute programs. To enhance security on the desktop version, users are encouraged to switch off automatic media downloads and manually handle their download preferences.

In response to the report, Telegram addressed the situation on social media, dismissing the validity of the alleged vulnerability. However, it reminded users to report any possible threats through its bug bounty program, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring platform safety.

Although CertiK acknowledged not contacting Telegram directly about the vulnerability, it reiterated that the warning was meant to educate users about potential risks and promote safer online practices. The security firm reaffirmed that the mobile version of Telegram remains unaffected due to its non-execution of programs, unlike the desktop version.
