A consumer advocacy group, Consumers' Research, has accused Tether of enabling the financing of terrorist organizations, human trafficking, and helping countries like Russia and Venezuela bypass international sanctions.

The group claims that Tether has been linked to nearly $20 billion in illegal transactions, and that it has been used by groups like Hamas, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS. They have also criticized Tether for refusing to undergo a full audit to prove that its stablecoin is backed 1:1 by real assets.

In response to these allegations, Tether has denied the claims, stating that it is committed to working with authorities to combat criminal activity involving its stablecoin. The company has also integrated the FBI and U.S. Secret Service into its platform to enhance efforts against such activities.

Despite Tether's denials, a new digital billboard has appeared in New York's Times Square, accusing the company of "corruption" and drawing comparisons to the recent collapse of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange. The billboard highlights the ongoing concerns and scrutiny surrounding Tether's operations and the potential risks associated with the use of its stablecoin.
