Recently released data reveals a notable slowdown in the supply growth of Tether (USDT), the largest stablecoin by market cap, which may signify reduced liquidity within the cryptocurrency markets. As of June 24, Tether's month-over-month supply increased by less than 1.5%, marking a sharp decline from the over 5% growth observed in April and May.

This decrease in Tether's supply growth comes amidst ongoing pressures on major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. According to a detailed report from crypto custodian Copper, the reduced inflow of Tether into the market reflects diminishing liquidity, as investors adopt a more cautious stance amid market uncertainties. Fadi Aboualfa, Copper's head of research, emphasized the broader implications:

"This slowdown suggests that less liquidity is flowing into crypto markets. With Bitcoin and Ethereum facing downward pressures and altcoins struggling to rally significantly, investors are exhibiting heightened caution."

The decline in Tether's trading volume further underscores this trend, plummeting from a peak of $767.22 billion on March 11 to $53.55 billion on June 24. Despite Tether's substantial market cap of $113 billion, the sluggish growth in USDT supply points to a reduced influx of new capital into the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Bitcoin, as the leading cryptocurrency, has experienced significant outflows recently, with over $540 million exiting the market in just the past week, according to Copper's latest analysis. Over the last 30 days, Bitcoin's price has declined by more than 10%, dropping from approximately $68,000 to around $62,000 at the time of reporting.

Aboualfa elaborated on the factors influencing Bitcoin's current market dynamics:

"As attention shifts towards ETF developments, Bitcoin's price movements reflect investor sentiment surrounding these regulatory changes. While this does not necessarily indicate a surge in bullish demand, it suggests that investors are opting to hold onto Bitcoin rather than selling, even in anticipation of potential market corrections."

Since the introduction of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) earlier this year, Bitcoin has seen a notable 37% increase in price. However, ongoing macroeconomic uncertainties are exerting additional pressure on crypto markets. A recent report by ETC Group highlighted that traditional financial markets are revising down global growth expectations due to consistent underperformance in U.S. economic data relative to forecasts.

"The Bloomberg US ECO Surprise Index, which tracks macroeconomic data surprises, has reached its lowest level since 2019, indicating a growing consensus on the deteriorating macroeconomic environment," noted the report.

According to ETC Group's analysis, the persistent downward revisions in global growth forecasts, coupled with rising recession risks in the United States, pose continued challenges for maintaining Bitcoin's price stability in the near term.
