Prosecutors asked a U.S. District Judge to jail Sam Bankman-Fried for 40-50 years following his conviction last November.

On March 15, federal prosecutors in a Manhattan courthouse accused Sam Bankman-Fried of misusing funds rightfully belonging to Alameda and FTX customers. They allege that he illegally obtained over $8 billion in cash and cryptocurrencies through his digital asset firms.

Despite being found guilty on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy by a jury last year, the FTX founder maintains his innocence. His attorneys recently requested leniency from U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, proposing a maximum prison sentence of six and a half years. Bankman-Fried’s legal team argues that he never intended to defraud Alameda and FTX customers and investors during his leadership.

Bankman-Fried plans to challenge his conviction and sentencing in an appeal court. Meanwhile, Judge Kaplan is scheduled to deliver the former FTX CEO’s sentence in a federal court on March 28.

In a related development, Bankman-Fried’s parents, Barbara Fried and Joseph Bankman, have filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit alleging their involvement in their son’s criminal enterprise. They deny any connection to the collapse of the crypto exchange FTX.
