Initially launched in 2012 as a world-building mobile game, The Sandbox evolved significantly by 2020, securing $2 million in funding to create an Ethereum-powered gaming world. This upgrade enabled users to monetize their experiences through non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The platform gained significant traction during the 2021 NFT boom, with users flocking to purchase virtual real estate in the metaverse. Notably, hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg began developing his own community within The Sandbox, dubbed the Snoopverse. This era's peak was marked by a notable transaction in early 2022, where an individual paid $450,000 to become Snoop Dogg's virtual neighbor.

Earlier this year, The Sandbox achieved unicorn status after securing an additional $20 million in funding. This financial boost is set to fuel further development of its decentralized virtual world, including new editing tools, enhanced social interactions, and innovative gameplay possibilities.
