Back in 2023, layer 2 was the buzzword. It felt like you couldn’t scroll Crypto X (Twitter) for thirty minutes without coming across the term. The majority of layers 2s that launched were built to improve Ethereum’s scalability, however, it’s a different case for the subject of this article.

Two days ago, Justin Sun, founder of Tron - a layer 1 blockchain announced plans to launch a Bitcoin layer 2 network in a bid to “make Bitcoin fun again!”

Tron is setting out on a mission to revolutionize the Bitcoin ecosystem daring to change how stablecoins and other tokens are utilized within the Bitcoin ecosystem. Tron aims to integrate several token types (specifically stablecoins) with the Bitcoin network by integrating Bitcoin Layer 2 solutions. Justin strongly believes Tron to be in the best position to effect this, owing to its role as the leading blockchain for the stablecoin markets.

As part of Sun's vision, Tron intends to decentralize and integrate the Bitcoin network, its Layer 2 solutions, and tokenization ideas like Bitcoin Ordinals with various token types including stablecoins like USDT and USDC. By enabling smooth transactions and interactions between the Bitcoin network and Tron's asset portfolio, this integration will increase the activity and utility of both blockchain ecosystems.

According to the plan as shared on Justin’s X page, the launch will have three roadmap stages namely Roadmap Stage α, Roadmap Stage β, and Roadmap Stage γ.

Roadmap Stage α:

This stage will see to the connection of Bitcoin to the TRON network, with multiple crypto exchanges making this possible. Various tokens like $USDT, $USDC, $WIN, $TRX, and NFTs will be integrated into the Bitcoin network via cross-chain tech, and the TRON DAO will venture into Bitcoin Ordinals, thereby enhancing support for BRC 20 tokens. Basically, this stage will kickstart the development of the Bitcoin layer 2 solution.

Roadmap Stage β:

For stage β, Justin plans to build partnerships with multiple existing Bitcoin layer 2 protocols that will allow TRON token holders to take part in restaking programs initiated by these protocols.

Roadmap Stage γ:

This stage will birth the launch of TRON’s Bitcoin layer 2 solution. This solution will integrate TRON, BTTC, and the Bitcoin network. It will combine the speed and low transaction fees that most proof-of-stake blockchains possess with the security that proof-of-work blockchains like Bitcoin utilize.

While still in the ideation stage, Justin has a lot of hope in this solution’s ability to pump more money into the Tron Network.
