Turkey's struggle with inflation, which has reached over 70%, has led to a significant surge in TRY's market share. As a result, Turkish citizens are increasingly turning to cryptocurrencies as a safer store of value, mirroring trends in other emerging markets. Bitcoin (BTC) has reached new all-time highs against the TRY in recent months, with the cryptocurrency rallying to 979,000 TRY in October 2023. The primary digital currency hit another all-time high against the lira in March, surging above 2.3 million TRY. The delisting of GBP and the Australian dollar trading pairs on the crypto exchange has boosted the share of TRY in overall fiat trade volumes. As a result, TRY has become an increasingly popular choice for traders seeking alternative currencies for transactions.

Turkey's consideration of new regulatory frameworks for the cryptocurrency sector is also noteworthy. A proposed bill aims to establish comprehensive regulations for crypto service providers, granting the Capital Markets Board (CMB) greater oversight of the cryptocurrency sector and introducing licensing measures for crypto firms. Additionally, plans to implement a taxation framework for gains from cryptocurrency investments aim to address criticisms from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which has placed Turkey on its "grey list" since 2021 due to concerns over financial transparency and compliance.
