UK lawmakers are calling on the government to prioritize the development of skills in crypto, blockchain, and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors. Member of Parliament Lisa Cameron led a debate urging investment in digital skills across all levels of education and the workforce.

Cameron emphasized the importance of preparing for the growth of the digital economy and ensuring that the UK has a talent pipeline to support its ambition of becoming a tech powerhouse. She highlighted the need for significant investment in education, training, and skills development to capitalize on opportunities in these emerging sectors.

While the UK government has taken steps to regulate crypto activities, including recognizing crypto as a regulated activity, Cameron believes more action is needed. She pointed out that employers in the digital sector are struggling to find the talent they require, indicating a pressing need for skill development initiatives.

Cameron advocated for greater collaboration with blockchain companies like Ripple, Circle, and Tether to address the digital skills gap. These partnerships could involve initiatives such as blockchain research programs for universities and educational campaigns.

In response, UK Minister for Skills Luke Hall acknowledged the digital skills gap, estimating its cost to the UK economy at £63 billion ($79 billion) annually. The government is committed to addressing this gap and supporting initiatives to develop the necessary talent for the digital economy.
