The White House issued a directive on March 28 mandating that all US federal agencies appoint chief AI officers. Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the extensive responsibilities of these officers, stating they will oversee all AI usage within their respective agencies and must possess requisite experience, expertise, and authority to ensure responsible AI deployment across the government.

Officials from various agencies have been collaborating since December to ensure compliance with the new regulations. Additionally, agencies must establish AI governance boards by May 27, a task only four agencies have accomplished as of March 28.

Among other requirements outlined by the White House, agencies must implement safeguards by December 1, 2024, to monitor public impact and reduce algorithmic discrimination, particularly in areas such as healthcare, airport travel, and fraud detection. Increased transparency is also mandated, necessitating agencies to release expanded annual inventories of AI use cases, report previously withheld metrics to the public, and disclose government-owned AI code and data when feasible.

Furthermore, agencies must inform the public of any AI exempted from compliance with OMB policy. Lastly, efforts to expand the AI workforce include hiring 100 AI professionals in government by the end of July, with an additional $5 billion allocated in the latest government budget for a government-wide AI training program.

These directives mark the completion of the 150-day action stipulated in President Biden's AI executive order from October 2023, which encompasses various AI safety, security, and privacy measures.
