Vanguard has named Salim Ramji, the former global head of iShares and index investments at BlackRock, as its new Chief Executive Officer and member of the board of directors starting July 8. This move comes as the current CEO, Tim Buckley, announced his retirement earlier this year.

Ramji, who left BlackRock in January 2024, was instrumental in managing a significant portion of the firm's client assets and overseeing the iShares platform during his tenure. Notably, he played a key role in the launch of BlackRock's first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund for retail investors, showcasing his expertise in the asset management industry.

Despite being the second largest asset management firm globally, Vanguard's decision to bring Ramji on board reflects a strategic move to leverage his experience and leadership in the financial sector. Ramji's background includes serving as a senior partner at McKinsey before joining BlackRock, where he demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing the interests of individual investors and a fiduciary ethos.

In response to Ramji's appointment, Eric Balchunas, a senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, highlighted Ramji's involvement in the development of the IBIT ETF at BlackRock and his interest in digital assets. While Ramji's pro-crypto stance contrasts with Vanguard's current anti-crypto position, his strategic vision aligns with Vanguard's mission to prioritize client success and navigate the evolving investor landscape.

Vanguard's stance on cryptocurrency, as reiterated by Janel Jackson, the head of ETF Capital Markets and Broker and Index Relations, remains cautious, with no immediate plans to introduce a spot Bitcoin ETF or other crypto-related products. Despite the growing discussion around cryptocurrencies, Vanguard emphasizes the importance of enduring investment merit and meeting clients' long-term needs in shaping its product offerings.
