Five African projects were recently awarded Optimism (OP) tokens during the third round of Retroactive Public Goods Funding (RetroPGF) during the last quarter of 2023.

The funding program is an experimental model launched by Optimism Collective to fund web3 projects. It was pioneered in 2021 and has awarded grants to 643 projects, spanning different categories, from infrastructure, education, and the developer ecosystem, to end-user experience.

Optimism Collective allocated 30 million OP tokens to reward contributions that have supported the development of Optimism. These African projects are EthSafari, EthAccra, Web3Bridge, DeFi Africa, and Bankless Africa, now known as Sovereign Frontier. They got a sum of 167,990 OP tokens.

The applications for the funding were done in October 2023, after which voting followed for eligible participants in November. The results of the rounds and token disbursement were released in January 2024, and a sum of 501 writers, creators, builders, and educators were chosen.
