Asia has the world's largest number of crypto owners (327M), but due to its large population, that does not reflect true crypto adoption. South America and North America have the largest percentage of their population owning crypto, which means that there has been greater adoption on these continents than on others.

The United Arab Emirates boasts the highest number of crypto owners per capita, with an impressive 25.30% of the country’s population owning crypto. The country’s government is considered to be pro-crypto, as described in Henley & Partners’ Crypto Wealth Report 2023:

“In the UAE, the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA-ADGM) was the first to provide rules and regulations regarding cryptocurrency purchasing and selling. The Emirates are generally very open to new technologies and have proposed zero taxes for crypto owners and businesses”.

It is important to note that 6 out of the top 10 countries here are Asian countries, representing a high level of crypto acceptance across the region.

Argentina leads the South African continent in crypto ownership per capita, largely due to the relief it provides in Argentina’s currency crisis. The devaluation of the Argentinian Peso is one of the main drivers because many Argentinians use crypto as a means of saving. They put their money in stablecoins so they don’t have to worry about devaluation.

South Africa leads the African continent in crypto ownership, with 7.5 M crypto owners (12.4% of the population).

Here are some interesting owner demographic numbers:

1. 61% of crypto owners are male, while 39% are female.

2. 71% of crypto owners have a bachelor’s degree or higher.

3. 72% of crypto owners are aged under 34—It is very much a young people-dominated industry with great potential for growth.

4. The annual income of the average cryptocurrency owner is $25,000.
