The possibility of a spot Solana exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States seems bleak, at least for now. According to Eric Balchunas, an ETF analyst at Bloomberg, a change in the administration and the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) may be necessary for such a fund to be approved. This comes after VanEck, an ETF issuer, filed for a spot Solana ETF with the SEC on June 27.

Matthew Sigel, head of digital assets research at VanEck, highlighted the decentralized nature, high utility, and economic feasibility of Solana, making a strong case for the VanEck Solana Trust. However, Balchunas remains skeptical, citing the lack of Solana futures ETFs in the US as a major hurdle. Historically, the SEC has approved futures products before spot ETFs, as seen with Bitcoin and Ether.

Balchunas suggests that a new US President and SEC leadership in 2025 could potentially change the landscape, paving the way for spot Solana ETFs. He specifically mentions Hester Peirce, a commissioner known for her crypto-friendly stance, as a potential game-changer. Jake Chervinsky, chief legal officer at Variant Fund, shares this view, believing that Peirce's interpretation of the Securities Exchange Act would be more favorable for spot Solana ETF applicants.

However, the SEC's current stance on Solana is clear, with Chair Gary Gensler labeling SOL a security in lawsuits against Binance and Coinbase. Adam Cochran, a partner at Cinneamhain Ventures, argues that it would have been prudent for VanEck to resolve SOL's security status before filing for a spot ETF.

The debate surrounding the success of a spot Solana ETF in the US continues, with some experts believing that a change in leadership and administration is necessary for approval. While VanEck's move is seen as a bold step, the road ahead remains uncertain.
