Democratic strategist Steven Kramer from New Orleans is in legal jeopardy for allegedly utilizing AI to fabricate and disseminate thousands of counterfeit robocalls impersonating President Joe Biden. These calls were dispatched to New Hampshire residents during the Democratic primary election in January, with the intent to hinder voter participation.

Indictment Details:

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office has charged Kramer with multiple offenses related to this scheme, including 13 felony counts of voter suppression and 13 misdemeanor counts of impersonation. The indictment asserts that, while working for rival candidate Dean Phillips, Kramer employed sophisticated deepfake technology to produce the robocalls. These calls, mimicking President Biden's voice, urged voters to withhold their votes for the primary and reserve them for the November election instead.

The robocalls conveyed a misleading message, suggesting that voting in the primary was less significant compared to the general election, thus aiming to sway the election outcome by diminishing voter turnout.

Additionally, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken steps against Kramer, proposing a substantial fine of $6 million for violating caller ID regulations due to the deceptive nature of the calls. Lingo Telecom, the telecommunications company responsible for transmitting the calls, faces its own penalties. The FCC has proposed a $2 million fine against Lingo Telecom for mislabeling the calls with the highest level of caller ID attestation, making it challenging for other providers to detect them as potentially fraudulent.
