The United States prosecutors have brought forth wire fraud and money laundering charges against an individual accused of orchestrating a significant "cryptojacking" operation that exploited cloud computing resources without authorization, purportedly amassing approximately $970,000 worth of cryptocurrencies including Ether, Litecoin, and Monero.

According to allegations from the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney's Office on April 15, Charles O. Parks III, also known as "CP3O," stands accused of defrauding two cloud computing providers to the tune of $3.5 million, utilizing their resources to clandestinely mine cryptocurrencies without remuneration.

The indictment suggests that Parks, arrested in Nebraska on April 13, masterminded a scheme spanning from January to August 2021, during which he allegedly leveraged deceptive tactics to secure elevated privileges and benefits from the cloud computing services providers. The accused purportedly created multiple fictitious accounts using various aliases and corporate affiliations, including entities such as MultiMillionaire LLC and CP3O LLC.

Upon securing heightened privileges and benefits, Parks is alleged to have exploited the computing resources for crypto mining activities, concealing his illicit operations while accruing substantial profits. The indictment further asserts that Parks employed intricate laundering methods to obfuscate the origins of his ill-gotten gains, funneling funds through cryptocurrency exchanges, payments providers, and bank accounts, as well as a New York City-headquartered nonfungible token (NFT) marketplace.

The accused reportedly used the proceeds to finance lavish expenses, including luxury vehicles, jewelry, and extravagant travel arrangements, evading federal reporting requirements by structuring transactions below the $10,000 threshold.

Breon Peace, Brooklyn's U.S. Attorney, emphasized the office's commitment to prosecuting individuals who exploit sophisticated technology for fraudulent purposes, underscoring the imperative of holding accountable those who engage in deceit and manipulation within the digital realm.

If convicted, Parks faces a maximum sentence of up to 50 years in prison, with the case scheduled for a hearing before an Omaha federal court on April 16.
