Arbitrum's recent backtrack on a significant proposal, involving the transfer of $1 billion worth of ARB tokens to capitalize the Arbitrum Foundation, has sparked worries regarding the governance of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). Token holders within the Ethereum Layer 2 scaling project opposed this move, expressing their discontent through voting. This situation highlighted an ironic twist as the DAO is governed by these same token holders.

While this incident showcased the power of DAOs, it also raised concerns about the ability to revise decisions made by lower-level entities in the hierarchy without facing repercussions, especially in matters involving substantial sums of money or potential profits.

Charlotte Dodds, Head of Marketing at Maple Finance, drew on her professional experience at TikTok to argue in favor of centralized decision-making for rapid growth, a perspective Arbitrum attempted to endorse by labeling it as ratification. However, this labeling may have been a misstep, suggesting a lack of consultation rather than a genuine democratic process.

Establishing a DAO requires addressing issues such as code transfers, forming a security council, and drafting a constitution. The creation of the Arbitrum DAO stemmed from the airdrop of over 1 billion Arbitrum governance tokens to nearly 300,000 wallets. Nick Cannon, Vice President of Growth at Gauntlet Network, noted that while backing down may seem beneficial in some cases, prioritizing the general consensus remains essential.

While the "big tent" approach may appeal to many, Thomas Klocanas, General Partner at BlockTower Capital, highlighted challenges when a smaller number of individuals participate in decentralized organizational frameworks. He noted that outcomes often deviate from expectations, with some token holders disengaged from governance matters, focusing solely on profit. Maple Dodds echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of considering these factors closely.
