Arch Labs, the creators behind Arch, a groundbreaking Bitcoin-native application platform, announced a successful $7 million Series Seed funding round led by Multicoin Capital. This funding round also saw participation from other significant investors such as Portal Ventures, OKX Ventures, Big Brain Holdings, CMS Holdings, Tangent, Cypher, and Newman Capital. The funds will primarily be used to expand the Arch team by hiring additional core developers, launching the Arch Network into mainnet in the second half of 2024, and further enhancing its growing application ecosystem.

A New Era for Bitcoin’s Functionality

The developments of Taproot and Ordinals have significantly expanded Bitcoin's capabilities beyond just a payment system. Taproot, introduced in November 2021, added smart contract-like functionalities with Schnorr signatures, Merkelized Abstract Syntax Trees (MAST), and Tapscript. Following this, Ordinals in January 2023 began allowing inscriptions of arbitrary data directly into Bitcoin transactions, setting the stage for Turing-complete applications. This evolution has notably invigorated development activities on Bitcoin, leading to the creation of over 50 "Layer 2 Networks."

Arch: A Bridgeless Trading Experience on Bitcoin

Arch distinguishes itself by offering a Bitcoin-native platform that avoids the typical requirement of asset bridging seen in other Layer 2 solutions, which often compromises the user experience and security. The Arch Network features a parallelized, proof-of-stake network that utilizes zk-proofs to enhance Bitcoin-native programmability. It includes a Rust-based zkVM, the ArchVM, and a decentralized verifier network, creating a trustless execution environment within the Bitcoin blockchain. This setup allows for the execution of rapid, secure, and fully-verifiable applications directly on Bitcoin.

Vishal Kankani, Investment Principal at Multicoin Capital, highlighted that unlike other Bitcoin Layer 2 solutions, Arch does not compromise on security for speed, making it an ideal platform for developers who prioritize Bitcoin’s inherent strengths.

Ecosystem Growth and Future Prospects

Several Bitcoin projects, such as Liquidium—a leading borrowing and lending marketplace—are already integrating with Arch to enhance their functionalities, including instant-liquidity loans and fungible-token pools. Over 20 stealth stage projects across various domains like stablecoins, decentralized exchanges, and borrow/lend markets are currently being developed on Arch’s devnet.

As excitement around Bitcoin’s capabilities continues to grow, the Arch Foundation plans to further support the ecosystem through upcoming hackathon and grant programs, aiming to solidify Bitcoin’s transition from a mere store of value to a versatile platform capable of supporting a wide range of decentralized applications (dApps).
