To substantiate his assertion, he provided the BBC with cryptographic keys linked to the same Bitcoin blocks shared by Nakamoto with developer Hal Finney during the cryptocurrency's inception in 2009.

Wright previously stated that he chose the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto in honor of seventeenth-century Japanese merchant and advocate of free trade, Tominaga Nakamoto. Despite extensive speculation about Satoshi's identity since 2016, numerous attempts by news organizations to unveil the true identity have been unsuccessful.

The recent dispute between Wright and COPA carries significant implications for both parties. The one-month trial aimed to challenge Wright's claim as Nakamoto and prevent potential copyright claims or legal actions he might pursue under that identity. Wright stands to gain a significant advantage in his legal battles with major cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken if he succeeds.

COPA's attorneys have accused Wright, a former IT security consultant with purportedly insufficient expertise to create Bitcoin, of fabricating evidence to support his claim. Wright faces charges for this offense.

Although the release date of Justice James Mellor's decision has not been officially announced, cryptocurrency enthusiasts eagerly await its outcome. If Wright chooses not to appeal, COPA suggests he will pursue "injunctive relief," potentially halting his claims as the author of the Bitcoin white paper and disavowing his identity as Satoshi Nakamoto. Conversely, if Wright prevails in court, the legal dispute will proceed to the next phase.

The second phase of the trial will determine if the publication of the white paper adheres to the terms of the MIT open-source license. A COPA spokesman affirmed that if the white paper was indeed published under this license, it could still be freely distributed. Despite the legal complexities, Wright may have an advantage in his remaining lawsuits against prominent cryptocurrency companies if his identity as Satoshi Nakamoto is confirmed.
