The New Bridge Model for Bitcoin

The BitSNARK system is an evolution of BitVM, a computing paradigm created by Robin Linus. By using a specialized software library, BitSNARK enables efficient and secure bridges that can facilitate the transfer of assets between Bitcoin's L1 and L2 rollups. This system offers a solution to Bitcoin's scalability issues without requiring any major upgrades to the network.

Improving Bitcoin's Layer 2 Solutions

Existing layer 2 systems on Bitcoin, such as the lightning network, often face challenges related to cost and complexity. Additionally, sidechains like Liquid and Rootstock rely on third-party federations to manage the bridge between L1 and L2, posing a security risk. Grail, powered by BitSNARK, aims to address these issues by allowing for secure asset transfers and preventing abuse by malicious actors through a unique security model.

Looking Towards the Future

The authors of the whitepaper plan to have at least two operators for the Grail bridge, with the potential to support more in the future. They are also exploring the possibility of creating a system that allows for operators to join or leave the group easily.
